Sugary drinks can cause certain cancers – Study April 19, 2016 Ayodele Oluwagbemi Researchers in a new study reported on Tuesday at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting in San Diego that people who consume a lot of processed carbohydrates, think snack foods and sweets and sugary drinks may face heightened risks of breast and prostate cancers. According to  Webmd,  given that breast and prostate cancers are two of the most common cancers in the United States, the connection gives more reason for people to cut processed foods from their diets, a lead researcher Nour Makarem has said. Makarem, a Ph.D. candidate in nutrition at New York University said, “The carbohydrate quality of your diet matters for a number of reasons.” In general, health experts already recommend limiting sugary drinks and processed carbohydrates, and eating more fruits, vegetables, legumes, fiber-rich whole grains and “good” unsaturated fats. Stamp duty dispute: Pending legal tussle stalls Senate hearing April 19, 2016 JOHN ALECHENU, ABUJA Proceedings before the Senate Committee on Communications on the rift between the National Postal Service and other federal revenue collection agencies over stamp duties collection, were on Tuesday stalled as a result of a pending litigation. Chairman of the committee, Senator Gilbert Nnaji, announced the adjournment of the hearing after members of the committee held closed door meeting to consider the various arguments earlier presented by stakeholders. According to the chairman, the Committee thought it wise to consult the legal department of the National Assembly and brief the President of the Senate on what transpired at the session before taking further action. FCT police recover 16 cars from robbery gangs April 19, 2016 Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase Adelani Adepegba, Abuja The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has recovered 16 cars stolen at gun-points by criminal gangs in Abuja, Niger and Kaduna States. It also paraded 31 suspects  arrested for various robbery cases in the FCT. The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Bala Chiroma, who paraded the suspects on Tuesday in Abuja, said those arrested include ‘one chance’ operators, 419 fraudsters, car thieves and petty criminals. He said the suspects were arrested at various parts of the FCT, while others were arrested at Kaduna and Niger states. Chiroma, who said the command had evolved new measures and strategies to beat criminals at their game, boasted that the strategies were yielding positive results which he said had led to the busting of numerous syndicates. EFCC names Ekweremadu, Anti-corruption Ambassador April 19, 2016 The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu Sunday Aborisade, Abuja The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Tuesday, honoured  the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, with a special title of “Anti-Corruption Ambassador” based on his support for the fight against graft. The National Assembly Liason Officer, of the EFCC,  Mr. Suleiman Bakari, according to a statement by the Special Adviser to the Deputy Senate President, Uche Anichukwu, stated this when he led a team of the anti-graft agency on a courtesy visit to Ekweremadu.
